Urban Roots

Urban Roots operates as a youth development program and one of the largest youth employers on the East Side. We create economic and educational opportunities for under-resourced, majority BIPOC youth, preparing them for academic and professional success while addressing immediate community needs around fresh food access, the environment, and wellbeing. On April 6th the day of service will focus on improving the green spaces in St. Paul. Projects will entail a trash clean up, invasive plant pulling (buckthorn or garlic mustard), preparing a gravel bed nursery for trees, and/or cleaning up our bee yard to prepare for new bees to move in.

Max capacity: 50 volunteers

Wakan Tipi

Wakan Tipi Awanyankapi is a Native-Led, East Side environmental stewardship nonprofit centered in Dakota values. Founded in 1997 by community activists, our project area stretches from Lake Phalen to the Mississippi River and throughout the East Side River District.

Day of Service volunteers will help us remove an invasive species known as garlic mustard at Wakan Tipi, also known as Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary. This work directly relates to the restoration efforts that are currently occurring at the site. Invasive species removals are incredibly helpful to the ecosystems on the site, which include ponds, oak savannah, prairie, wetlands, and bluff woodlands. Please note, bug spray, boots, pants, and long-sleeve clothing are highly recommended due to ticks. Trash bags and rubber gloves will be provided.
