Civic Engagement

We partner with school districts to empower civically engaged global citizens through service-learning.

NYLC collaborates with school districts to develop students as informed and engaged citizens, equipping them to take meaningful action in their communities and beyond. Through an innovative approach that integrates academic instruction with real-world experiences, we help students meet state civic seal requirements while fostering a deeper understanding of equity, community, and societal challenges.

Our Work with Districts

NYLC provides tailored support to:

  • Deliver inclusive service-learning opportunities that ensure all high school students have access to sustainable, inquiry-based, hands-on experiences. These activities align with academic standards, meet civic seal requirements, and foster deeper student engagement.
  • Develop essential skills that equip students with critical skills for college, careers, and civic life, including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Create high-quality civic engagement opportunities that engage students in meaningful, informed action through service-learning, encouraging them to take active roles in addressing real-world challenges in their communities.

Our approach emphasizes community involvement, enabling students to connect cross-disciplinary academic content to real-world problems. NYLC’s service-learning instruction is grounded in the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards, providing students with the skills and dispositions needed for active and effective civic engagement.

“The progress that Stockton Unified School District has made over the past 6 months in partnership with NYLC, when increasing the knowledge and capacity of service-learning for our staff and students, is truly transformational. Existing curriculum within CTE, Ethnic Studies, Language Development and Social Studies is becoming much more accessible to our student populations when paired with the standards for service-learning as presented by NYLC."
