Service-Learning 101: Designing High-Impact Learning Experiences

October 7, 12:00 pm CDT

Not all service-learning is created equal. A canned food drive checks a box; a well-designed service-learning experience changes how students see themselves and their communities. This workshop walks participants through the core elements that separate surface-level volunteering from real service-learning, intentional connection to academic standards, authentic community partnership, structured reflection, and measurable impact. Participants will learn a practical framework for designing experiences from the ground up, starting with identifying a genuine community need and ending with reflection practices that help students make sense of what they’ve learned. Whether you’re building your first project or refining a long-running program, you’ll leave with concrete tools you can put to use right away, plus a clearer sense of what separates good intentions from real impact.
