The Power of Partnership in Building Service-Learning Networks Across the Americas

By Amy Meuers, NYLC CEO

The founding of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network (REDIBAS) in 2005 marked a pivotal moment in the advancement of international pedagogical collaboration, particularly in the areas of experiential education and civic engagement. Since its inception, the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) has played a vital role not as a singular driving force, but as a committed and collaborative partner. NYLC has helped shape REDIBAS through shared vision, collective expertise, and a deep belief in the transformative power of service-learning.

REDIBAS was established in Buenos Aires in October 2005, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for cross-cultural educational exchange within the Ibero-American region. At the heart of this network is the long-standing partnership between NYLC and the Latin American Center for Service-Learning (CLAYSS). As co-executive secretariats, the two organizations have developed a model of horizontal collaboration that challenges traditional hierarchical approaches to international education. Together, NYLC and CLAYSS have promoted mutual learning, co-leadership, and the shared construction of knowledge. These principles have shaped the mission and practice of REDIBAS over the past two decades.

NYLC has worked alongside REDIBAS to convene and strengthen a global community of practice. Each year, NYLC hosts one of the two annual REDIBAS gatherings during the National Service-Learning Conference, creating an essential space for dialogue, innovation, and exchange. This event, paired with the August meetings held in Buenos Aires during International Service-Learning Week, establishes a consistent rhythm of collaboration that enables Networks from different countries to share experiences, refine practices, and build enduring relationships rooted in shared values.

REDIBAS’ efforts to advance service-learning pedagogy have always included partnerships with educators, youth, and researchers across the globe. Through the stewardship of service-learning research and best practices, REDIBAS elevates service-learning as a credible pedagogy globally.

The expansion of REDIBAS into new geographic regions reflects the strength of collaborative leadership. Most importantly, the partnership between NYLC and CLAYSS as co-executive secretariats demonstrates the potential of sustained collaboration across borders. This binational leadership model respects the uniqueness of each institution while advancing a shared mission. Together, we have helped create a vibrant and thoughtful network that bridges theory and practice, and that supports educators and youth leaders alike in their efforts to create more just, connected communities.

As REDIBAS continues to evolve, the partnerships that sustain it remain a powerful example of what can be achieved through intentional and equitable collaboration. Our shared work extends beyond individual organizations or national boundaries. It contributes to a global movement that centers educational equity, civic responsibility, and collective leadership. For others seeking to build lasting international collaborations, REDIBAS offers a compelling model of how global coordination and local autonomy can work in harmony.
