New International Partnership Between NYLC and the Freudenberg Stiftung Foundation to Reignite a Strong Civic Democracy
The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Germany-based Freudenberg Stiftung Foundation to spearhead a new research project aimed at fostering democracy education. This innovative project, titled “Service-Learning in Civic Education: Reigniting a Strong Vibrant Democracy” (SLICE), will unfold over the next three years and promises to promote democracy through curriculum integration, bolster students’ belief in democratic values, and empower young citizens with a deeper understanding of their role within society.
In the first year, NYLC will identify two high schools in the United States to develop and incorporate SLICE as an innovative instructional strategy for civic education. In the second year, the Freudenberg Foundation will select two high schools in Germany. This bi-national initiative will facilitate a cross-cultural dialogue, enabling educators and students from both countries to explore and compare their approaches to democracy education.
“This project comes at a time when a worryingly small number of young people stand firmly behind their democracy,” said Amy Meuers, NYLC CEO. “Utilizing service-learning through the course of this project will engage students in authentic learning, as they identify community issues and problems, and step up to assume responsibility and practice active citizenship.”
SLICE stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and collective wisdom, bringing together educators, students, and community stakeholders from both nations. The project will provide significant opportunities for high school students, as well as school leadership, teachers, administrators, and staff at each pilot site.
