Developing Young Leaders Series: Professional Development for Youth

DYL201:  Youth Leadership Training

This half-day training seeks to empower young people as leaders.  Young people have rarely been seen as change-makers, but when given the opportunity to lead and to be civically engaged, young people rise to the challenge.  NYLC’s Youth Leadership Training creates a space for young people to identify and foster their own strengths, recognize and admire the assets of others, and approach difference with curiosity and collaboration rather than fear.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of their own leadership style
  • Strengthen their ability to work together with people from different backgrounds
DYL202:  Youth Service-Learning Training

This full-day training builds upon NYLC’s Youth Leadership Training by developing the service-learning practice of youth participants to effectively create change.  In addition to learning about leadership styles and effective group collaboration, participants will understand how to put their leadership skills to use.  This training guides participants through the IPARD cycle and equips participants with the tools they need to create an impactful service-learning project.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of their own leadership style
  • Strengthen their ability to work together with people from different backgrounds
  • Leave with tools to lead and create change in their communities
DYL203:  Developing Civic Leaders

Young people have the ability and responsibility to make positive change in their community.  This multiple-day training builds upon the Youth Leadership Training and Youth Service-Learning Training.  In addition to learning about leadership styles, effective group communication, and service-learning, participants learn specific methods of identifying and addressing issues that they see as a need in their community through community investigation and partnership-building.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of their own leadership style
  • Strengthen their ability to work together with people from different backgrounds
  • Leave with tools to lead and create change in their communities
  • Learn how to identify and develop meaningful relationships with community partners
  • Participate in a community mapping exercise to determine assets and needs of their community
  • Identify root causes of problems in their community to address systemic issues
  • Discover how to address community problems through different types of service including direct, indirect, and advocacy

Custom Training Example: Rapides Foundation Youth Advisory Board

NYLC facilitated a four-part training with the Rapides Foundation of Alexandria, LA, to assist with the staff preparation, planning, and onboarding of their first Youth Advisory Board. In part one of the training, an NYLC trainer traveled to Alexandria and trained Rapides staff and AmeriCorps members in the concepts of Positive Youth Development. Part two consisted of remote support, as NYLC trainers led Rapides staff through the creation of a Youth Advisory Board (YAB) structure. NYLC trainers traveled again to Alexandria for part three: a day-long leadership training for the new YAB members. Youth participants identified their leadership styles, practiced facilitating positive group communication, and discussed the roles of empathy and deep listening in their work as servant leaders for their communities. The fourth and final part of the training were three skill-building webinars intended to deepen the service-learning knowledge of the YAB members.

National Youth Leadership Training

For decades, NYLC has hosted a summer camp that powers the next generation of leaders. Racism, classism, and oppression affect everyone, but young people are among the most vulnerable. The National Youth Leadership Training gives young people the support and resources to address these issues – and make meaningful change happen.
