DESCRIPTION:February 5 @ 4:30 pm–6:00 pm CST\nIn celebration of Youth Leadership Month\, we invite you to join us for “Cultivating Changemakers: A Panel Discussion on Youth Leadership”. This dynamic event will bring together inspiring young leaders\, educators\, and youth advocates to explore the critical role of youth in shaping their communities and the world. Through engaging dialogue and powerful stories\, we will highlight how youth leadership\, voice\, and action are driving positive change. \n\n\n\nDiscussion topics will include: \n\n\n\n\nThe importance of youth leadership in today’s world.\n\n\n\nEmpowering youth to find and use their voice for advocacy and change.\n\n\n\nReal-life examples of youth-led initiatives and their impact.\n\n\n\nStrategies for fostering leadership skills and civic engagement among young people.\n\n\n\nOvercoming challenges and barriers faced by young leaders.\n\n  \nGuest speakers include: \n \nDom Verwey\n \nDriven by family\, authentic action\, nature\, and reflection – Dom is an international school service learning educator with a passion for supporting those around him to develop their service leadership endeavours\, especially young solutionary changemakers. He is inspired by the ways in which we can collaboratively draw on a constellation of knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions to regeneratively solve some of the world’s deepest systemic challenges. He has an academic background in exercise physiology and neurocognition\, and holds a Master’s degree in Climate Change and Development through the University of London SOAS. Dom loves bringing together multiple stakeholders to co-construct new pathways in education\, for both inside and outside the classroom. \n\n\n\nFeven Tesfaye \nFeven Tesfaye is a junior at Burnsville High School\, located in Minnesota. She is deeply interested in the forms of advocacy amongst youth and the intersection of service learning and environmental equality. She has served as a Congressional District representative for the Minnesota Youth Council\, which is continuing to place importance on environmental sustainability with the hopes of increasing interaction with young people. She is keen on equity for all minorities to have a right to speak out\, and continues to help this mission as a Youth Fellow for her county’s League of Women Voters. At her school\, she participates in a Youth Service Advisory Council\, Speech and Debate\, Student Council\, and Women in Stem in all hopes of getting more service participation with the students at her school. She is excited to interact with people across the country and create a more interactive and sustainable youth-led future! \nJahnavi Rao \nJahnavi Rao is the President and Founder of New Voters\, a youth-led 501(c)3 that empowers high school students to be heard and prioritized in politics. Since starting New Voters 7 years ago as a junior in high school\, the over 300 directors and interns have civically engaged tens of thousands of high school students across 400 high schools in 39 states. She also serves as the Director and Founder of the New Voters Research Network\, the convener of the New Voters Collaborative\, and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement at the University of Maryland. Previously\, Jahnavi served as an intern in the White House Office of Public Engagement where she helped drive youth engagement\, Deputy Campaign Manager on a state-legislative race\, Director of “Boston Votes!” at the Harvard Kennedy School\, and youth head of Youth Engagement and Millennial Participation at the DNC. Jahnavi has been recognized as a 2025 Forbes 30 under 30 recipient\, a L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth\, an Aspen Ideas Festival Fellow in the Raikes Family Foundation Cohort\, and a Rhodes Scholar Finalist. Jahnavi graduated from Harvard College in May 2023\, majoring in Government with a minor in Music.  \nSyed Murtaza-Rose \nSyed is passionate about learning\, youth development and community. Previously\, he has worked for an education nonprofit leading professional development\, service-learning\, and DEI initiatives. Within his own community\, he is involved with his local boards and commissions\, participates in community gardening\, and started a mutual aid group. As NYLC’s Youth as Solutions Program Director\, Syed is excited to learn and work alongside youth and adults to understand ways we can collectively make change and develop the next generation of leaders. \n  \nPanel Facilitator: \n \nMadelyn Qayyum \nMadelyn Qayyum is a junior at Obra D. Tompkins High School in Houston\, Texas. An advocate for positive psychology\, gender empowerment\, and digital wellbeing\, Madelyn serves in organizations such as United Nations Girl Up and Half the Story. When she’s not pursuing her academic and personal interests\, you can find her running through a local park\, curating Spotify playlists\, or reading Stoic philosophy. She co-chairs the Imagining America Assessing Practices of Public Scholarship (APPS) collective\, which focuses on democratically-engaged assessment practices to empower and transform systems\, communities\, and individuals.  She is also the co-director of the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative (The Collaborative)\, a membership organization dedicated to advancing community-based global learning and research for more just\, inclusive\, and sustainable communities. \n  \n \nIsabella Alchorne\, Representative from Movimento Futuro (Future Movement) \nIsabella Alchorne is Brazilian\, with a degree in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (2016) and in Pedagogy from Instituto Singularidades (2021). She is a Master’s student in the Postgraduate Program in Education: Teacher Training at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo\, studying life purpose and learning assessment. In 2018\, she co-founded the Associação Movimento Futuro\, which aims to mitigate the soft skills problems of children\, adolescents\, and young people through educational projects focused on developing life purpose and soft skills\, as well as teacher training. During this period\, she has written educational materials on life purpose\, soft skills\, and service-learning for teachers; as well as evaluated Brazilian and international awards in these three areas. Additionally\, she has been conducting teacher training on service-learning for public schools in partnership with CLAYSS since 2020. Isabella is also a teacher of life purpose to students at middle and high school. \n \nFelix Lorenzen\, Managing Director at Stiftung Lernen durch Engagement (Foundation Learning through Civic Engagement) \nFelix Lorenzen is a managing director at the Berlin-based Stiftung Lernen durch Engagement (Foundation Learning through Civic Engagement). He co-initiated both the transnational project Service-Learning for Democracy in Europe (SLEAD) and the European Network for Service-Learning in Schools and Organizations (SLESON). A main focus of his work at the foundation is to help teachers implement Service-Learning in civic education on European topics and to connect schools in Germany with those in other parts of Europe. Felix studied Political Science in Germany\, Spain\, Sweden\, and the United States. He has been working in the non-profit sector since 2010\, with a strong emphasis on youth participation\, youth mobility\, and educational justice. \n  \nPanel Facilitator: \n \nKatherine Nguyen\, NYLC Youth Advisory Council Member \nKatherine Nguyen is a current Junior at Clayton High School located in St. Louis\, Missouri. As a proud midwestern Vietnamese American\, she works in her community for Asian American advocacy. She is a leader in the Asian American Civic Scholars group\, an intern for the Very Asian Foundation\, and assists her school with the Asian Student Association and other Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion events. She also enjoys other passions including music\, STEM\, and literature. SUMMARY:Planning & Designing Service-Learning Courses for Teacher Education Programs
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nJoin us Tuesday\, July 11 and Wednesday\, July 12 from 9 AM – 12 PM CST on Zoom! \n\n\n\nThis course is being offered at no cost by the National Youth Leadership Council in collaboration with Innovageous. Teams of 2-3 of higher education faculty for institutions is highly recommended. \n\n\n\nEffective service-learning implementation and design is the foundation of student engagement\, learning\, and success. Learn from experienced educators and service-learning leaders as you work to refine and improve your courses\, and develop courses that meet service-learning requirements for Teacher Education. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPlanning and Designing Service-Learning Courses for Teacher Education Programs will be facilitated by service-learning experts who introduce the pedagogy\, process\, research\, and planning of service-learning as an instructional strategy through hands-on experiences. The course will focus on using service-learning as an instructional strategy to improve student outcomes and meet genuine community needs in K-12 classrooms. \n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of this course\, participants will leave with an understanding of how to: \n\n\n\n\nTap into service-learning as a high quality instructional practice \n\n\n\nDesign K-12 service-learning experiences to meet academic standards\n\n\n\nDifferentiate service-learning experiences by grade levels\n\n\n\nIncorporate the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice into curriculum planning \n\n\n\nDevelop a Teacher Education course plan to promotes service-learning as an instructional strategy\, and includes topics\, content\, objectives\, and assessments that support quality service-learning in k-12 classrooms\n\n\n\nIntegrate service-learning into higher education coursework to model effective implementation\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFacilitator Bios: \n\n\n\nShira Woolf Cohen is an educator\, community organizer and leader who has been recognized locally and nationally for her work. Shira spent 19 years at a charter school in Philadelphia where she co-lead the growth of the school from a K-8 with 500 students to a K-12 school with 1500 students in her role as Teacher\, Dean\, Vice Principal and Principal. She served as an Adjunct Instructor at multiple universities and a board member and chair for several local and national nonprofit organizations. She currently supervises aspiring leaders during their principal practicum and teaches pre-service teachers in their graduate program at Holy Family University and University of Phoenix\, and is the facilitator for the National Youth Leadership Council’s Instructional Leadership in Service-Learning Certificate Program. She was a recipient of the G. Bernard Gill Award in Service-Learning Urban Leadership and is a Cohort 3 Senior Neubauer Fellow in Educational Leadership. Shira holds a Bachelors of Science in Middle School Education and Mathematics from Lesley University\, and a Masters of Education in Urban Education and Principal Certification from Temple University. She also completed the National Institute for School Leaders preparation program.  \n\n\n\nAmy Meuers is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Leadership Council\, the leading service-learning organization in the country for more than 40 years. Amy has spent 20 years with NYLC leading both national and international service-learning initiatives that expand the capacity of educators to utilize service-learning as an instructional strategy with students of all age-levels. Under her leadership\, NYLC launched Youth as Solutions\, a national service-learning program that supports teams of youth across the country in addressing issues impacting their communities.  She co-founded the Coalition for Service-Learning to support advocacy efforts for service-learning at the federal level\, and published Equity in Service-Learning: Self Assessment Tools for Quality Engagement\, Engage: Service-Learning for Afterschool\, and the revised Getting Starting in Service-Learning: Integrating the Process into K-12 Teaching. Amy co-designed and facilitates NYLC’s Certificate in Service-Learning Instructional Leadership which has graduated more than 50 leaders in K-12 and higher education over the past two years. She is a graduate of the Hubert H. Humphrey Policy Fellows (21-22) and is a  city commissioner in her hometown of Brooklyn Park\, Mn. Amy holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Administration from Globe University\, and a Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership from Regis University. She also completed Northwestern University Certificate of Executive Leadership and ASU Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
