An excerpt of CEO Amy Meuers’ message at the 28th annual National Service-Learning Conference, March 22, 2017, in Anaheim, CA.
Today, we are facing a challenge: the proposed White House budget calls for the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service, including AmeriCorps and Senior Corps.
Service-learning has been a strong component of all the programs of CNCS for many years. In fact today nearly 12,000 Senior Corps and AmeriCorps members support students in classrooms across the country. In addition, many nonprofits, like NYLC, utilize AmeriCorps members to help deliver programming, increasing our ability to serve you.
Too many young people today do not have the access to the quality education that service-learning provides. I am asking you to bring service-learning back to the forefront of the national service and education conversations.
There are many ways for you to act today:
You can contact your elected officials via the Voices for National Service website.
Complete a template letter.
Or pick-up the phone and call.
You can also share your stories, share your impact, and share your commitment through social media and op eds. Show us how CNCS is important to you with #LetUsServe.
The thing to realize is that if the Corporation for National and Community Service is eliminated, it is very unlikely that it will ever come back.
Young people: your entire generation is going to have a major influence in the next election and your voice matters right now. Use it, and support what matters to you.
